People succeed by being well informed. What happens when people are well misinformed?
Hoax news have been circulating for years. It is only now that its taken seriously. This fake news phenomenon was brought to light during the US elections. People cannot distinguish between real and fake information, as they are dressed like real news, at one point they use authentic news providers to legitimise the information.
Facebook is the one platform mostly used for these fake news . Readers merely read the heading,then share it amongst each other, not realising that it's fake news.
On other platforms such as Whatsapp, many people receive news like coupons or information about your whatsapp being free if you share the message with ten other friends. Most of these news are of controversial issues, hence it's hard to tell if it's the truth or not.
President Obama has been stressing his concerns regarding this issue for years since he got elected. Many people have yet to recognise this as a problem, but we cannot seat and wait for others to realise how much of a problem this is. If that's the case, what needs to be done?
Already there are information verification institutions across the world that are able to tackle this issue, I believe it is time that social media companies and other news providers to tap into these resources, so as to ensure consumers of the information provided are given correct information.
On the side of the consumers and readers, it is advised that they use their own discretion. If something sounds too good to be true, do not share it with others until you got further evidence pointing towards that fact. At the end of the day, we are also part of the problem.
Digital media is wide and therefore full control and monitoring is almost impossible, there are too many channels that can be used to communicate such false news, however the fact that people are involved means we can overcome this problem by being aware of the existence of this problem and equipping ourselves into solving it.
By working together with news providers and other stakeholders we can at least tighten the platforms to make it impossible for fake news to circulate.
